Colorado Motorcycle Laws

The traffic laws motorcyclists must adhere to are similar to other motor vehicles, but there are additional laws riders must obey. You can learn more about the riding requirements in Colorado by visiting the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) or contacting the Colorado Springs motorcycle accident lawyers at McDivitt Law Firm.

We know the law, and our Denver motorcycle accident lawyers can explain what’s expected of you as a motorcyclist. Call (866) 241-6143 or fill out a free initial consultation form now.

Requirements for a Motorcycle License

State laws in Colorado require all motorcycle riders to obtain an “M” endorsement on their current licenses. Before receiving an “M” endorsement, a rider must:

  • be at least 16 years old,
  • pass a written exam at the local driver license office,
  • and complete an on-bike skills test.

It is recommended that all new riders sign up for additional training courses offered by state or local instructors.

Helmet Laws and Riding Equipment

Helmet laws in Colorado require all motorcyclists and passengers to wear a Colorado Department of Transportation approved helmet if they are 17 years of age and younger.

In addition, all riders—no matter their age—are required to wear eye protection, which may include a helmet visor, goggles, or glasses made with safety glass or plastic.
