Colorado Motorcycle Laws: Motorcycle Insurance

Requirements

By law, motorcycle riders must carry the following amounts of liability insurance in Colorado:

  • $25,000 – per person for bodily injury
  • $50,000 – per accident for bodily injury
  • $15,000 – per accident for property damage

According to The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), motorcyclists must also carry med-pay coverage, which pays for medical expenses incurred after an accident.

Penalties

In addition to having coverage, riders must be able to show proof of coverage at all times, such as:

  • a certificate of self-insurance, or
  • an insurance identification card.

Failure to show proof of insurance coverage may result in the following:

  • First Offense
    • $500 fine (minimum)
    • Four points on driving record
    • Possible suspension of license
  • Second Offense
    • $1,000 fine (minimum)
    • Four-month suspension of license
  • Third Offense
    • $1,000 fine (minimum)
    • Community service requirement
    • Eight-month suspension of license
